Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Television broadcasting has long been a powerful tool for disseminating information, shaping public opinion, and influencing policy decisions. In Nigeria, national policy advocacy often relies on media platforms, including television, to inform the public about government initiatives, policies, and their implications. In Gombe South Local Government Area (LGA) of Gombe State, television broadcasting plays a significant role in communicating national policies to rural and urban populations. Television, with its visual and auditory appeal, provides an effective medium for reaching diverse audiences, offering detailed explanations of complex policies and encouraging public participation in the democratic process (Aliyu & Adebayo, 2024; Jibril & Musa, 2023). This study explores the role of television broadcasting in national policy advocacy in Gombe South LGA, focusing on how TV programs contribute to the awareness, understanding, and engagement of citizens with national policies.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the widespread use of television in Nigeria, there is limited research on its specific role in national policy advocacy, particularly in rural areas like Gombe South LGA. Many citizens remain unaware of national policies or have a limited understanding of how such policies affect their lives. This study aims to assess the role of television broadcasting in promoting awareness and understanding of national policies in Gombe South LGA, exploring how TV programs can facilitate greater citizen engagement and influence public opinion on national issues.
